Himanshu Nanda - Indian Classical Bansuri Performer and Educator
Shri Himanshu Nanda
is an internationally recognized flautist from Pune, India. He is an
artiste par excellence known for his outsized contribution to the world
of Bansuri, the north indian bamboo flute. Himanshuji hails from the
famous Senia-Maihar gharana of musicians following the age old Dhrupad
tradition and is a senior disciple of the great bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chourasia.
His exemplary artistry and dedication to Indian
Classical Music has distinguished him as a master of Bansuri both in
India and abroad. He has enthralled audiences through his concerts in
India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, South Africa,
USA, and France. His work has won him prestigious awards like “Best
Musician”, “Talent of the Year”, “Yuva Pratibha Samman” and the “Sur
Mani” title conferred by Mumbai’s Sur Singar Samsad.
Influenced by his grandfather’s lyrical and poetic
leaning, Shri Himanshu Nanda has taken to music at a young age. By early
teens, he was on his way to pursue learning of Bansuri and eventually
dedicating his life to the art. Soon, he was chosen as one of the
handful of disciples to directly learn under the tutelage of the maestro
himself, Shri Pandit Hariprasad Chourasia.
Shri Himanshu Nanda learnt the art of enthralling
audience by accompanying his guru to highly acclaimed performances. He
uses silence in between his performances as a way to lead his audience
into a different plane of consciousness. Himanshuji had the opportunity
and honor of sharing the stage with stalwarts like Fazal Qureshi, George
Brooks, Gwyneth Wentink, and Sivamani. He also partnered with classical
dancers like Sitara Devi, Darshana Jhaveri, and Pt. Birju Maharaj in
their creative pursuits.
Himanshu is an educator at heart. He has an
impressive pedigree spanning the worlds of both art and science. He is a
Sangeet Visharad, and has a Master’s degree in Music and is a big
believer in the healing power of music. In collaboration with Arpan, a
voluntary organization in Mumbai, and one of his disciples and a faculty
from IIT Madras, Himanshu has embarked on a journey to teach Bansuri to
children in the autistic spectrum. To continue the study of positive
impact of music on autism.
He worked as a Director - Music at “Chinmaya Naada
Bindu”– A Gurukul for Indian performing arts, Kolwan, Pune, India. He
regularly conducts immersive workshops that cover the techniques and technicalities of Bansuri through his innovative lecture-demonstrations and performances.
To make the art of Bansuri available to everyone who seeks it, he established the The Mystic Bamboo Academy for
students to learn playing flute online. His online flute lessons are
one of the most comprehensively documented collections on Internet. His
online flute courses are a combination of online flute lessons and
unique opportunities to interact with accomplished artists through a
series of Baithaks. These lessons have built a vibrant online community
and include hundreds of students in India and abroad.
Music, for Himanshu Nanda is not mere entertainment.
It is an exalted and rapturous form of nuanced interaction between
artists and audience. He commits his life to learn from his guru till
the end of his life and strive to propagate and preserve the rich
tradition of classical music.
